A Tandy 1000EX was our first IBM PC compatible machine in our home. It was a gift of a family friend around 1990 or 1991. At that time, it already horribly obsolete. The shelves of our local software stores maybe had a three or four titles that would still play on it. It only had 256kb of RAM and 5 1/4" floppy drive. The joystick ports were fried and we used the keyboard for everything. Over time, I found people that had stashed some old software away and we started making copies. I played Black Cauldron, Flightmare, Digger, Rogue, Maniac Mansion, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and the original John Madden Football. In 1995, it was retired by shiny new AST Advantage Adventure 6066d, a 486DX/66 PC compatible.
I didn't even know my parents gave it back to our family friend for about two or three years, when I asked about moving it into my bedroom. However, it was long gone...
However in the winter of 2022, I met someone who would become a good friend. He was selling a Tandy 1000EX setup with an external drive, a Tandy CM-5 monitor and one of Robert Krenicki's 3-in-1 Expansion Cards. The Tandy 1000 and that good friend's collection plunged me back into collecting vintage computers and consoles.
Currently, I have a Tandy 1000EX and a Tandy 1000TL that I use for the show. Nothing beats dithered 16-color Tandy graphics and a creative 3-voice Tandy soundtrack.
